چکیده

Stability test of nanotubes with presence of single vacancies has been performed by means of tight-binding molecular dynamics and electron–ion dynamics within the framework of the density functional theory. A 4 ( A diameter nanotube having a single vacancy with three dangling bonds has been found to retain its cylindrical shape under high temperature around 4000 K; despite its large internal strain energy. Meanwhile, an electronic excitation of vacancy-related state has shown considerable atomic displacement, which may cause extraordinary large lattice vibration or nanotube decay. Furthermore, the single vacancy can stabilize itself by making carbon dimer to remain with only one dangling bond. Narrower nanotubes tend to prefer this self-stabilization and thus could be tolerant to the presence of defects. r 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 61.48.+c; 61.72.Bb; 71.15.Pd

Spontaneous decay of excited atomic states near a carbon nanotube.

The spontaneous decay process of an excited atom placed inside or outside a carbon nanotube is analyzed. Calculations have been performed for various achiral nanotubes. The effect of the nanotube surface is shown to increase the atomic spontaneous decay rate by up to 6 orders of magnitude compared with that of the same atom in vacuum. This increase is associated with nonradiative decay via surf...

Inelastic X-ray Scattering by Electronic Excitations under High Pressure

Investigating electronic structure and excitations under extreme conditions gives access to a rich variety of phenomena. High pressure typically induces behavior such as magnetic collapse and the insulator-metal transition in 3d transition metals compounds, valence fluctuations or Kondo-like characteristics in f -electron systems, and coordination and bonding changes in molecular solids and gla...

Pumping of vibrational excitations in the coulomb-blockade regime in a suspended carbon nanotube.

Low-temperature transport spectroscopy measurements on a suspended few-hole carbon nanotube quantum dot are presented, showing a gate-dependent harmonic excitation spectrum which, strikingly, occurs in the Coulomb-blockade regime. The quantized excitation energy corresponds to the scale expected for longitudinal vibrations of the nanotube. The electronic transport processes are identified as co...

Nonlocal Dispersion Analysis of a Fluid – Conveying Thermo Elastic Armchair Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Under Moving Harmonic Excitation

In this work, the nonlocal elastic waves in a fluid conveying armchair thermo elastic single walled carbon nanotube under moving harmonic load is studied using Eringen nonlocal elasticity theory via Euler Bernoulli beam equation. The governing equations that contains partial differential equations for single walled carbon nanotube is derived by considering thermal and Lorenz magnetic force. The...
